The Throckmorton Plot

Mary Queen of Scots’ word of agreement during the Throckmorton Plot.

The Throckmorton Plot was a plot in 1583 to murder Queen Elizabeth I and replace her with her second cousin Mary, Queen of Scots.  The plot was created by Sir Francis Throckmorton whose cousin was Elizabeth’s first lady in waiting.  Throckmorton worked with his brother Thomas Throckmorton and was also in contact with Thomas Morgan, the ambassador for King Philip II of Spain.  There was talk between them of a Spanish invasion.  Throckmorton wanted to restore Roman Catholicism in England and free Mary, Queen of Scots.  The assassination attempt was in concordance with an invasion of England led by Henry I, Duke of Guise as well as a revolt of English Roman Catholics.  The attempt was unsuccessful and Throckmorton was eventually caught and arrested.  Throckmorton’s other co-conspirators were put into the Tower of London.  Throckmorton himself was later tortured for more information about the plot and ultimately was executed.
